Cow Urine: Benefits in High Blood Pressure & Astama

Following article is written by a patient of two diseases; blood pressure and asthma that appeared in Kalyan Monthly, September 1995 page 801. This article has been given here unchanged-

My age is approximately 79 years. I was suffering from high blood pressure and asthma for long time. I was taking allopathic medicines regularly but unfortunately without any effect.

In gauseva issue of Kalyan monthly I read about treatment of various diseases using cow urine. I made up my mind, why not try this. I used to catch cold often. Therefore I started taking half spoon Alum powder in half a cup of cow urine. First day itself I improved. After about a month, when I got checked by doctors surprisingly I came to know that my lungs got fully cured and blood pressure has also become almost normal.

Earlier I could not walk even two hundred steps. But now I walk two kilometres daily.

If somehow I had known about it earlier, I would have been able to save my wife who died, five months back due to enlargement of liver. Various allopathic medicines were not effective.

It is my first hand experience that using cow urine for a short duration has miraculous effects to deal and cure all human ailments and disorders.

Abstract

Cow urine has a unique place in Ayurveda and has been described in ‘Sushrita Samhita’ and ‘Ashtanga Sangraha’ to be the most effective substance/secretion of animal origin with innumerable therapeutic values. It has been recognized as water of life or “Amrita” (beverages of immotality), the nector of the God. In India, drinking of cow urine has been practiced for thousands of years. It is an important ingredient of panchgavya, a term used to describe five major substances (urine, milk, ghee, curd and dung), obtained from cow. All the five products possess medicinal properties, and are used singly or in combination with some other herbs against many diseases, even those not curable by allopathic treatments. This kind of alternative treatment, termed as ‘panchgavya therapy’ or ‘cowpathy’, has been reported to be beneficial even for dreaded diseases like cancer, AIDS and diabetes. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine from India routinely use cow urine as a remedy and the medicines made from it are used to cure several diseases.

Improvements have been shown or reported with those suffering from

  • flu
  • allergies
  • colds
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • bacterial/viral infections
  • tuberculosis
  • chicken pox
  • hepatitis
  • leucorrhoea
  • leprosy
  • ulcer
  • heart disease
  • asthma
  • skin infections
  • aging
  • chemical intoxication etc.

Cow urine can kill the number of drug resistant bacteria and viruses. Recently the cow urine has been granted U.S. Patents (No. 6896907 and 6,410,059) for its medicinal properties, particularly for its use along with antibiotics for the control of bacterial infection and fight against cancers.

Through extensive research studies a cow urine distillate fraction, popularly known as ‘ark’, has been identified as a bioenhancer of the activities of commonly used antibiotics, anti-fungal and anti-cancer drugs. Thus it can promote and augment the bioactivity or bioavailability or the uptake of drugs in combination therapy and reduce the dose and duration of treatment. These milestone achievements highlight the beneficial role of cow urine in treating bacterial infections and cancers and that cow urine enhances the efficacy and potency of therapeutic drugs.

During the past few years cow urine therapy has provided promising and authentic results for the treatment of cancer, a deadly malady which is being faced by the mankind and the incidences of which are ever increasing in the current scenario of changed lifestyle and food habits along with exposure to predisposing factors of carcinogens such as tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol intake, environmental pollutants, occupational health hazards etc. Anti-cancer potential of cow urine therapy has been reflected by several case reports, success stories and practical feed back of patients for the treatment of cancer. Cow urine enhances the immunocompetence and improves general health of an individual; prevent the free radicals formation and act as anti-aging factor; reduces apoptosis in lymphocytes and helps them to survive; and efficiently repairs the damaged DNA, thus is effective for the cancer therapy. Experimentally it has been proved that among all sorts of urine  the urine of the Indian cows is most effective. Seeing the potential use of indigenous cow urine in several ailments including even the cancer, the use of Gomutra (cow urine) of indigenous breeds of cattle should be promoted extensively. However, scientific validation of cow urine therapy is required for its worldwide acceptance and popularity. This review highlights the anti-cancer activity of cow urine and the strategies for promoting its vital medicinal potential and prospective for the benefit of mankind with the view that cow urine therapy needs immediate attention, promotion, and wide popularity and proper support of the scientists, researchers and clinicians to strengthen this alternate low cost therapy having no side effects, as generally observed with chemotherapy and radiation therapy being followed for curing cancers, and thus inspire confidence in the public about its good virtues.

Hope for Cancer Disease

Reference : “Kalyan” magazine, May 1995

Complicated diseases even cancer can be cured by cow urine. Here is a true story of a cancer patient becoming hale and hearty with the use of cow urine of desi breed:

Sri Vinayak Narsingh Kulkarni, (At & Po. Sarola, taluka: Kati, Barshi, District Solapur, Maharashtra) aged 63 years, suffered from tongue and tonsils cancer. He consulted the doctors from Siddheshwar cancer hospital, near Solapur who suggested 18 and 12 total 30-radiation dose treatment immediately.

He immediately started taking radiation treatment in April 1992. After 3 rounds of radiation treatment he started experiencing excessive pain. Sri Kulkarni felt that instead of tolerating excessive pain due to radiation, he decided that it was better to die without any treatment at all. He left the cancer hospital and went back to his village. After reaching home, his condition was precarious. He felt excessive weakness and was unable to walk even a few steps. He could take only liquid diet and could not eat even a small bit of bread.

However a miraculous change came over his life when he came across an article an old book about cow urine, cow dung, curd, milk and ghee (clarified butter) based preparation that is panchagavya and its medicinal qualities. According to it, by taking panchagavya daily, inner detoxification takes place. Surrendering to Lord Krishna and on the advice of local Vaidya, Sri Kulkarni started taking, only two out of five constituents of Panchagavya i.e. only cow urine 100 ml and fresh cow dung 30 mg. He mixed them and after filtering the mixture through a clean cloth he drank it.

Now this began his daily ritual to take the filtered solution of mixture of cow dung and cow urine in the mornings after toothbrush. Gradually over a period of four months his weakness reduced and slowly he started taking his complete diet.

Surprisingly TUMOUR AROUND THE NECK DISAPPEARED as there occurred a miraculous change in his health. Whereas earlier he could not walk even four steps, now he was able to walk five kilometers.

Sri Kulkarni went again to the Allopathic physician of known reputation for a consultation at Solapur. The doctor on the basis of external indications told him that he was cured of cancer.

I went to meet him on 30 November 1995 in his village. Sri Kulkarni at the age of 63, looked very healthy.

  • सभी फल (ताजा एवं सूखें);
  • सभी मेवें बादाम आदि और उनका तेल;
  • हर प्रकार की चीनी;
  • आलू, साबूदाना, शकरकंद;
  • नारियल;
  • जैतून;
  • दूध;
  • ताज़ी अदरख;

  • सभी प्रकार के अनाज (जैसे बाजरा, जौ, मैदा, चावल और उरद दाल आटा) और उनसे बनी कोई भी वस्तु;
  • मटर, छोला, दाल और सभी प्रकार की सेम, उनसे बनी अन्य वस्तुएं जैसे टोफू;
  • नमक, बेकिंग सोडा, बेकिंग पावडर, कस्टर्ड और अन्य कई मिठाईयों का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता क्योंकि उनमें कई बार चावल का आटा मिला होता है;

What is Ekadashi vrat (vratham) & its importance?

What is Ekadasi?

The Sanskrit word Ekadasi literally means eleven. Ekadasi is the eleventh of the fifteen-day lunar month. In one of the lunar months (called the light month) the moon grows from new moon to full moon and in the following lunar month (called dark month) it diminishes from full moon to no-moon. Thus every calendar (solar) month there are two Ekadasis, the light Ekadasi that occurs on the eleventh day of the waxing moon, and the dark Ekadasi that occurs on the eleventh day of the waning moon. It is recommended that all Vaisnavas should fast on this day of Ekadasi. Such austerity will be greatly beneficial for their devotional life.

Origin of Ekadasi

In the fourteenth chapter of Padma Purana, in the section named Kriya-sagara-sara, Srila Vyasadeva explains the origin of Ekadasi to Sage Jaimini as follows:

At the beginning of the material creation, the Supreme Lord, for the purpose of punishing the sinful human beings, created a personality whose form was the embodiment of sin (Papapurusha). The different limbs of this personality were constructed of the various sinful activities. In order to control Papapurusha, the personality known as Yamaraja came into existence along with the different hellish planetary systems. Those living entities that are very sinful are sent after death to Yamaraja, who will in turn, according to their sins, send them to a hellish region to suffer.

The living entities, according to their karmic activities thus began to enjoy or suffer. Seeing so many souls suffer in hellish condition, the compassionate Lord began to feel sorry for them. In order to help them He manifested from His own form the deity of the lunar day Ekadasi. Thus, Ekadasi is the personification of the vow to fast on the eleventh day of the lunar month. Therefore Ekadasi is the selfsame form of the Supreme Lord Vishnu. Sri Ekadasi is the utmost pious activity and is situated at the head among all vows.

Afterwards the different sinful living entities began to follow the vow of Ekadasi and were then elevated quickly to the abode of Vaikuntha. Following the ascension of Sri Ekadasi, Papapurusha (sin personified) gradually saw that his own existence was being threatened. He approached Lord Vishnu praying that, ‘O Lord, I am your created progeny, and it is through me that you wanted distress given to the living entities who are very sinful. But now, by the influence of Sri Ekadasi, I have become all but destroyed. You please save me from the fear of Ekadasi. No type of pious activity can bind me. But Ekadasi only, being Your own manifested form, can impede me. I cannot find a place where I can be free from fear of Sri Ekadasi. Oh my Master! I am a product of Your creation, so therefore very mercifully direct me to a place where I can reside fearlessly.’

After this, Lord Vishnu, observing the condition of the Papapurusha began to speak thus: ‘Oh Papapurusha! Rise up! Don’t lament any longer. Just listen, and I’ll tell you where you can stay on the auspicious lunar day of Ekadasi. On the day of Ekadasi, which is the benefactor of the three worlds, you can take shelter of foodstuff in the form of grains. There is no reason to worry about this any more, because My form as Sri Ekadasi Devi will no longer impede you.’ After giving direction to the Papapurusha, the Supreme Lord Vishnu disappeared and the Papapurusha returned to the performance of his own activities. According to the instructions of Lord Vishnu, every kind of sinful activity that can be found in the material world takes its residence in this place of foodstuff (grains). Therefore those persons who are serious about the ultimate benefit for the soul will never eat grains on the Ekadasi day.

Observing Ekadasi

All Vedic scriptures thus strongly recommend observing complete fast on the day of Ekadasi (without drinking water). Every one from the age of eight to eighty, irrespective of varna-ashram, gender, or any material consideration is recommended to fast on this day to make spiritual progress.

For those who cannot perform the austerity of complete fasting, it is recommended that one can follow Ekadasi by eating once a day at midday, or eating once a day in the evening. However under no conditions should one eat grains in any form on this day.

Devotional service on Ekadasi

Ekadasi with all its benefits should be understood as something that is there to support the ultimate goal of every living entity, devotional service to the Lord. By the mercy of the Lord, this day has become extremely auspicious for the performance of devotional service. Freed from so many sinful desires a devotee can execute unalloyed devotional service and receive the mercy of the Lord.

So, for devotees, fasting on Ekadasi is a means to progress on their path of sadhana-bhakti. The process of fasting is purifying to the consciousness and it frees up the devotee from so many material considerations. Since devotional service performed on this day is several times more effective, devotees like to engage themselves as much as possible in chanting, kirtan, discussing the pastimes of the Lord and performing other forms of devotional service.

Srila Prabhupada recommended that devotees should try and chant at least twenty-five rounds on this day, read about the Lord pastimes and minimize material affairs. However, understanding that devotees who are already fully engaged in active service of the Lord (like book distribution, preaching etc.) he made some concessions, like eating and drinking liquids in the day as long as there is no grains in them.

Glories of Ekadasi

In the Bhakti-sandarbha, by Srila Jiva Gosvami, there is a quotation from the Skanda Purana admonishing that a person who eats grains on Ekadasi becomes a murderer of his mother, father, brother and spiritual master, and even if he is elevated to a Vaikuntha planet, he falls down. It is strictly forbidden for one to accept any kind of grain on Ekadasi, even if it is offered to Lord Vishnu.

In the Brahma-vaivarta Purana it is said that one who observes fasting on Ekadasi day is freed from all kinds of reactions to sinful activities and advances in pious life. The basic principle is not just to fast, but to increase one’s faith and love for Govinda, or Krishna. The real reason for observing fast on Ekadasi is to minimize the demands of the body and to engage our time in the service of the Lord by chanting or performing similar service. The best thing to do on fasting days is to remember the pastimes of Govinda and to hear His holy name constantly.

How to Fast on Ekadasi

Ekadasi (sometimes spell Ekadashi) is a fast observed by both Hare Krishna devotees and Hindus on the eleventh day of the waxing moon. There are many rules regarding foods that can be consumed and differ depending on the strictness of the fast. A Vaishnava calendar should be consulted so individuals can fast on the correct day.

Rules for Observing Ekadasi Fast

Full fasting on Ekadasi is good practice in restraining the senses, though the main reason for observing the fast is to remember Krishna. The needs of the body are simplified on this day and it is advised to sleep less to concentrate on devotional service, read scriptures and chant.

The fast begins at sunrise and lasts until the next sunrise so if one eats grains during this period the fast is broken. It is not advised to eat in the pre-dawn hours in Vedic teachings, and especially not on ekadasi. Fasting should be followed from the time of waking on the ekadasi day. If the fast is accidentally broken, it should be followed for the rest of the day and the following day too.

Individuals whom are participating in a strict fast may not eat anything after sunset on the previous night to ensure there is no undigested food left in the stomach on Ekadasi. Many avoid eating any prasadam from an offering that includes grains. Vedic literature teaches that sin (papa-purusha) takes shelter in grains on Ekadasi, and therefore should be avoided in all forms (even if offered to Krishna). Ekadasi grain prasadam should be stored until the next day or can be distributed to persons not strictly following these regulations or to animals.

How to Break Ekadasi Fast

If a nirjala (complete fast without water) is observed then the fast does not have to be broken with grains on the following day. The fast can be broken with caranamrita (water from bathing Krishna’s feet), milk or fruit at the prescribed time outlined on the vaishnava calendar. This time will vary according to your location. If a partial Ekadasi fast is observed with fruit, vegetables, nuts etc. then it is necessary to break it with grains.

Foods That can be Eaten When Fasting on Ekadasi

The following foods and spices can be eaten when observing this fast:

  • All fruits (fresh and dried);
  • All nuts and nut oils;
  • All types of sugar;
  • Buckwheat;
  • Potatoes, cassava and sweet potatoes;
  • Coconut;
  • Olives;
  • Milk;
  • Fresh ginger;
  • Black pepper; and
  • Rock salt.
  • Restricted foods on Ekadasi

If even one grain is ingested, even accidentally, the Ekadasi fast is considered to be broken. Therefore great care is taken when cooking and spices are taken from a brand new package untouched by grains. The following foods must not be consumed on ekadasi:

  • All grains (e.g. millet, barley, farina, rice and urad dahl flour) and products derived from these ingredients;
  • Peas, chickpeas, dahl and all types of beans, including derived products such as tofu;
  • Salt, baking soda, baking powder, custard and many sweets are avoided as they are often mixed with rice powder;
  • Sesame seeds (except on Sat-tila Ekadasi, when sesame seeds may be offered as well as eaten);
  • Spices such as asafetida, cloves, fenugreek, mustard, tamarind, fennel, cardamom and nutmeg.

Fasting on ekadasi is an important austerity followed by devotees of Krishna and is undertaken to increase spiritual development. It is better to eat a little of the allowed foods rather than fast completely and become too weak to fulfill your duties and devotional service.

Cow slaughter in India – How and when did it start

“The cow is my mother” (Mahabharata). Cows appear in numerous stories from the Puranas and Vedas. Lord Shree Krishna was brought up in a family of cowherders, and given the name Govinda (protector of the cows). Also Shiva is traditionally said to ride on the back of a bull named Nandi. In ancient rural India every household had a few cows which provided a constant supply of milk and a few bulls that helped as draft animals.

Observant Hindus, almost always abstain from beef, and the slaughter of cows is considered a heinous sin in mainstream Hinduism because Cows are considered to have played the central role in cultural, economical and religious field of India. The Indians have loved and respected cows since Vedic times giving it the reverence of being a mother. And it is also appropriate as no animal on the face of the planet can be considered pure so pure that its urine and dung too contains medicinal and healing properties, what to say of the milk and the milk products obtained from it.

The first ever slaughter house I reportedly have to be set up in India in 1760 by the governor general Lord Clive because when the British invaded and captured India they were highly astonished by the fact the cows are the backbone of Indian agriculture and if the cows persist in this country then the British should leave because the economy of India could not be maneuvered by any until the existence of Cows in India.

Thinking on this pattern Lord Clive set up the first and many more slaughterhouses across the country in which on crore cows got slaughtered annually.

Cow slaughter- the present scenario

Unfortunately the present situation is such that people in general themselves are supporting the slaughtering of cows as they do not find the ways to support their maintenance due to fast degradation of agricultural economy across the country. Another reason for this heinous practice is the lack of knowledge of the cow products and how these Panchgavya products could be used to maintain the holy cows.

What can be done to improve the situation?

If people especially the agriculturalist are made aware of manufacturing and usage of cow products then we can definitely reach a point where cow slaughter can be reduced if not completely eradicated. This website also gives an insight how cow products like Ghee, Ghanvati, Go-Ark and other cow product which are not only life saving medicines but also natural products that can help to save and conserve the cows in the future.

How to Make Ghee (Clarified Butter): Definition & some methods to prepare it

Make Ghee at Home

Traditionally Ghee or clarified butter is made from cow’s (indigenous breed) milk. Known by names like go-ghrut, ghee, ghi etc it is an integral part of Vedic and Modern Hindu religious customs like Yagna sacrifices (Homam), marriages, observance of ritualistic devotional services to Lord Krishna and other Indian festivals Ghee is used as Panchamrut along with four other sacred ingredients like sugar, honey, go-dadhi (curd from cow’s milk). It makes an essential part of all Indian and South Asian cuisine without which the food lack added richness and nutrition as the belief system prevails.

Ayurveda considers Ghee to be sattvik when used as food and thus it also serves as the main constituent of many Ayurvedic medicines.

Ghee does not contain any trans fats as present in vanaspatighee and therefore referred to as Desi Ghee or asli ghee (real or genuine ghee) to distinguish it from trans fats that are generally the cause of chronic cardiovascular disease. The term shuddha ghee is often misused by the traders of vanaspati ghee or partially hydrogenated fats to promote their product due to no enforcement of strict and stringent laws in many regions.

Now let’s take a quick look at the methods that are commonly followed to prepare Ghee (so called ghee as the methods other than described in Vedic literature yield only butter oil and not ghee; in absence of real knowledge of facts) in general-

  • At home from milk cream or Malai
  • By centrifugation method in separator machine in dairy industries from separated cream from milk .
  • By traditional milk fermentation route.

How to Make Ghee (Clarified Butter)

The best and ideal method to prepare Ghee is traditional milk fermentation route.

Ghee or heated clarified butter fat particularly that is prepared by traditional milk fermentation route, has good medicinal value which is completely lacking in butter prepared from other methods.

Ghee is a carrier of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, which our body needs in very small quantities but cannot make for itself. These vitamins perform many essential functions.

Similarly, the essential fatty acids, which cannot be synthesized in our body are also supplied by Ghee.

Such Ghee has been recognized as Indian medicine in Ayurveda. It is used in various disorders both externally as well as internally.

However such qualities are lacking in the butter oil prepared from the other two methods mentioned above.

Emerging scientific findings indicate that Ghee prepared from such method following Vedic instructions contains several components such as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), sphingomylein, butyric acid, myristic acid and vitamin A, which have potential to inhibit the development of cancer.

In fact, Ghee is the richest natural dietary source of CLA, which has shown to inhibit carcinogenesis of colour, mammary tissue, skin and stomach. CLA present in Ghee is also known to have serum cholesterol lowering properties.

Compared to other fats and oils, milk fat (ghee) is easily digestible. Also the digestibility of Ghee is 99%.

Effect of Method of Preparation of Ghee:

Pure Home Made Ghee

Adoption of any other method except that mentioned in Ayurveda for manufacture of Ghee affect the constituents like carotene, vitamin A and E and phospholipids. At each stage of processing during Ghee making, such as cream separation, pasteurization, butter making, some loss of carotene and vitamin A takes place, hence more the steps involved in the method of Ghee making lesser will be the percentage of these constituents and degradation of its medicinal and nutritive value. In case of indigenous method of Ghee making higher recovery of vitamin A is achieved because large amount of fat soluble vitamin A is transferred to the fat phase during souring of whole milk into dahi and subsequently during churning of dahi into makkhan.

Raising temperature to more than 125 C during manufacture of Ghee and storage of Ghee for prolonged period drastically reduces the vitamin A content and almost completely destroy carotene content.

The total phospholipid content of creamy cow butter varies between 75-218 mg/100g, which is higher than the values of 61-67 mg/100g found in cow makkhan (curd process butter). There is no loss of phospholipid on converting butter or makkhan into Ghee.

So the reader can decide himself now how important it is to follow the right procedure to make Ghee.

Ghee in Ayurveda

Ghee helps to loosen up and liquefy toxins and pacify humors (Doshas) in the skin and blood (called the outer disease pathway). Ghee helps to carry the healing benefit of many herbs, spices and other foods to the deep cells and tissues of the body. It opens the small channels for dislodging and removing heavy toxins. Thus, toxins begin to drain from deeper tissues and start to flow in the gastro intestinal tract for elimination. It also lubricates and moistens the membranes and tissues. It protects tissues from damage, helps in the proper flowing of wastes and toxins from the body. People with a strong digestive power can use more ghee than those with a weak digestive system. As per Ayurveda the colon is related to all other organs and tissues. When the colon is cleansed and toned successfully, the entire body receives healing and rejuvenation. The colon is the main organ through which the body absorbs nutrients thus, a proper functioning colon is imperative for efficient assimilation of nutrients.

What is Ghee or Butter?

Ghee is a semi-liquid form of butter without water content, lactose and other milk solids. It is prepared by gently heating butter until it becomes a clear golden liquid. Ghee is light, pure and does not become rancid for a long time. Ghee, the Ayurvedic cooking medium, has a rich, buttery taste and aroma, and comes with a host of benefits listed in the traditional Ayurvedic texts.

Ghee Benefits in the Ayurvedic Science

In Ayurveda ghee is a foundational ingredient, it imparts the benefits of the best essential fatty acids without the problems of oxidized cholesterol, trans-fatty acids or hydrogenated fats. It is also resistant to free radical damage and is both salt and lactose free. It contains butyric acid, a fatty acid with antiviral and anti-cancer properties. Ayurveda considers ghee as the ultimate cooking oil, with diverse mind/body benefits listed in the ancient texts.

  1. Absorption: Ghee is an oil that can bond with lipid-soluble nutrients and herbs to penetrate the lipid-based cell walls of the body. Thus, it increases the potency of certain herbs by carrying the active components to the interior of the cells, which helps to increase Marrow, Semen & Ojas (Immunity).
  2. Preservative: Ghee contains no water, so it does not spoil easily and hence preserves the original freshness and potency of herbs and foods. Therefore, no refrigeration is required for ghee. It is ancient Ayurvedic and folk assumption that as Ghee becomes aged, though its taste becomes slightly bitter its effectiveness and healing properties increases. In many Ayurvedic classical formulation 5 to 10 years older Ghee is highly recommended.
  3. Digestion: The Ayurvedic texts say that ghee lubricates the digestive system and improves the digestive power because it helps enhance digestion without irritating the stomach and balance the stomach acids to maintain and repair the mucus lining of the stomach. Ghee aids proper digestion and nutrient assimilation. People who are lactose intolerant can generally consume ghee.
  4. Mind: Ghee is said to promote all three aspects of mental functioning: learning, memory and recall. The traditional texts also designate ghee a medhya Rasayana, (Healthy and balanced fat in the body), beneficial for mental alertness and memory. It supports healthy vision, voice, intelligence and brain function.

Other Benefits of Cow Ghee
